Placid Industries PLB-50 Magnetic Particle Brake PLB-50

Description
Placid magnetic particle brakes, also called powder brakes and mag particle brakes, provide smooth and repeatable torque control. Torque is proportional to input current, and independent of shaft speed, thereby allowing for precise control. These self-contained magnetic particle brakes are ideal for tension control, load simulation, and soft stops. Some large units are available with fan or pneumatic cooling. Torque rating from 1 oz.-in to 300 lb.-ft. With no electrical excitation, the shaft freely rotates. With electrical excitation, the shaft becomes coupled to the case. While the load torque is less than the output torque, the shaft won’t rotate. When the load torque is increased, the brake will slip smoothly at the torque level set by the coil input current.

Datasheet Summary
Powered by GS/AI

The PLB-50 is a magnetic particle brake designed for smooth torque control in applications requiring tension regulation, load simulation, or soft stopping. It mounts horizontally and has a torque range of 1.4 to 30 lb.-ft., with a maximum RPM of 500 and a maximum case temperature of 160°F. The brake dissipates up to 160 watts of heat, or 240 watts with 7 psi compressed air at 7 ft.³/minute. It operates on a maximum input current of 1.25 amperes, requiring a constant-current DC power supply. The shaft inertia is 0.071 lb.-in.-sec², and the unit weighs 17 lbs. with a maximum overhung load of 125 lbs. De-magnetized drag torque is 0.2 lb.-ft. Compressed air cooling is applied via a 1/8-19 BSPT threaded port. The brake must be electrically grounded and protected from metal filings and liquids. All mounted components must be slide fits, and flexible couplings are required for shaft connections.
