Placid Industries KB-5 Magnetic Particle Brake KB-5

Description
Placid magnetic particle brakes, also called powder brakes and mag particle brakes, provide smooth and repeatable torque control. Torque is proportional to input current, and independent of shaft speed, thereby allowing for precise control. These self-contained magnetic particle brakes are ideal for tension control, load simulation, and soft stops. Some large units are available with fan or pneumatic cooling. Torque rating from 1 oz.-in to 300 lb.-ft. With no electrical excitation, the shaft freely rotates. With electrical excitation, the shaft becomes coupled to the case. While the load torque is less than the output torque, the shaft won’t rotate. When the load torque is increased, the brake will slip smoothly at the torque level set by the coil input current.

Datasheet Summary
Powered by GS/AI

The KB-5 magnetic particle brake provides controlled torque between 0.5 and 38 lb.-ft. with input current, independent of RPM, and operates with a freely rotating shaft when de-energized. It has a maximum speed of 1800 RPM and requires up to 24 V DC. Heat dissipation reaches 275 watts at 1000 RPM and increases to 425 watts with 5 psi compressed air at 7 ft³/minute through a 1/4-19 BSPT port. The case temperature must not exceed 160°F, and the maximum overhung load is 125 lbs. Shaft inertia is 0.084 lb.-in.-sec² and the unit weighs 31 lbs. It must be mounted horizontally, grounded, and protected from metal particles and moisture. A flexible coupling is required for shaft connections.
