Placid Industries B5Z Magnetic Particle Brake B5Z

Description
Placid magnetic particle brakes, also called powder brakes and mag particle brakes, provide smooth and repeatable torque control. Torque is proportional to input current, and independent of shaft speed, thereby allowing for precise control. These self-contained magnetic particle brakes are ideal for tension control, load simulation, and soft stops. Some large units are available with fan or pneumatic cooling. Torque rating from 1 oz.-in to 300 lb.-ft. With no electrical excitation, the shaft freely rotates. With electrical excitation, the shaft becomes coupled to the case. While the load torque is less than the output torque, the shaft won’t rotate. When the load torque is increased, the brake will slip smoothly at the torque level set by the coil input current.

Datasheet Summary
Powered by GS/AI

The B5Z is a magnetic particle brake designed for precise torque control in applications requiring smooth slip and adjustable tension. It has a torque range of 0.1 to 5 oz.-in., operates at a maximum speed of 3500 RPM, and dissipates up to 2 watts of heat continuously. The brake weighs 3 oz. and has a shaft inertia of 16 × 10⁻⁸ lb.-in.-sec². It is available with rated coil voltages of 6 VDC, 12 VDC, or 24 VDC, with corresponding coil resistances of 29, 115, and 467 ohms. Maximum overhung load is 12 oz. Response time is 6 ms unforced and 3 ms forced. Case temperature must not exceed 160°F. Installation requires grounding, alignment with a flexible coupling, and use of clamp-type couplings due to the non-flatted shaft.
