The C35 magnetic particle clutch is a torque-controlling device that couples input and output shafts via electrical excitation, with torque proportional to coil current and independent of slip speed. It operates within a torque range of 1 to 35 lb.-in., supports a maximum RPM of 1000, and dissipates up to 30 watts continuously. The case temperature must not exceed 160°F, and it withstands a maximum overhung load of 50 lbs. The output shaft inertia is 15 × 10⁻⁵ lb.-in.-sec², with response times of 70 ms unforced and 25 ms forced. Weight is 9 lbs. Available coil voltages are 6 VDC, 12 VDC, 24 VDC, and 90 VDC, with corresponding resistances and rated currents. The clutch requires a flexible coupling, precise shaft alignment, and electrical grounding during installation.
Placid magnetic particle clutches, also called magnetic powder clutches, provide a wide operating Torque Range. The torque is smooth and repeatable, thereby allowing for accurate control independent of the speed. The torque vs. current curve is nearly linear, making these clutches uniquely suited for tension control unwind/rewind applications, load simulation, torque limiting, and adjustable soft starts. Available in small and large sizes with torque ranging from 0.3 to 300 lb.-feet.
