The C2 magnetic particle clutch is an electromagnetic device that couples input and output shafts proportionally to coil current, with a torque range of 1 to 32 oz.-in. and a maximum RPM of 2000. It operates at rated DC voltages of 6 V, 12 V, or 24 V, with corresponding coil resistances of 14, 56, and 230 ohms. The clutch dissipates up to 6 watts continuously and has a maximum case temperature of 160°F. Weight is 0.7 lbs, output shaft inertia is 26 × 10⁻⁷ lb.-in.-sec², and response times are 9 ms unforced and 4 ms forced. It requires electrical grounding and flexible shaft coupling. Maximum overhung load is 4 lbs.
Placid magnetic particle clutches, also called magnetic powder clutches, provide a wide operating Torque Range. The torque is smooth and repeatable, thereby allowing for accurate control independent of the speed. The torque vs. current curve is nearly linear, making these clutches uniquely suited for tension control unwind/rewind applications, load simulation, torque limiting, and adjustable soft starts. Available in small and large sizes with torque ranging from 0.3 to 300 lb.-feet.
