Placid Industries B6 Magnetic Particle Brake B6

Description
Placid magnetic particle brakes, also called powder brakes and mag particle brakes, provide smooth and repeatable torque control. Torque is proportional to input current, and independent of shaft speed, thereby allowing for precise control. These self-contained magnetic particle brakes are ideal for tension control, load simulation, and soft stops. Some large units are available with fan or pneumatic cooling. Torque rating from 1 oz.-in to 300 lb.-ft. With no electrical excitation, the shaft freely rotates. With electrical excitation, the shaft becomes coupled to the case. While the load torque is less than the output torque, the shaft won’t rotate. When the load torque is increased, the brake will slip smoothly at the torque level set by the coil input current.

Datasheet Summary
Powered by GS/AI

The B6 magnetic particle brake is a self-contained braking device that provides smooth, current-proportional torque control from 0.2 to 6 lb.-in. without dependence on shaft speed. It operates at a maximum of 2000 RPM and can continuously dissipate up to 15 watts of heat while maintaining a case temperature below 160°F. The brake supports four DC coil voltages: 6 V, 12 V, 24 V, and 90 V, with corresponding coil resistances of 7.0, 28, 111, and 1425 ohms. The shaft inertia is 23 × 10⁶ lb.-in.-sec², and the response time is 20 ms unforced or 10 ms forced. It weighs 1.5 lb and has a maximum overhung load of 25 lbs. The brake requires electrical grounding and a flexible coupling for shaft connections.
