Placid Industries B5ZD Magnetic Particle Brake B5ZD

Description
Placid magnetic particle brakes, also called powder brakes and mag particle brakes, provide smooth and repeatable torque control. Torque is proportional to input current, and independent of shaft speed, thereby allowing for precise control. These self-contained magnetic particle brakes are ideal for tension control, load simulation, and soft stops. Some large units are available with fan or pneumatic cooling. Torque rating from 1 oz.-in to 300 lb.-ft. With no electrical excitation, the shaft freely rotates. With electrical excitation, the shaft becomes coupled to the case. While the load torque is less than the output torque, the shaft won’t rotate. When the load torque is increased, the brake will slip smoothly at the torque level set by the coil input current.

Datasheet
Datasheet Summary
Powered by GS/AI

The B5ZD is a magnetic particle brake providing torque control proportional to input current, with free rotation when de-energized. Torque ranges from 0.05 to 1 oz.-in. at up to 4000 RPM, with a maximum heat dissipation of 1.5 watts and case temperature limit of 160°F. It operates at 6 V, 12 V, or 24 V DC, with coil resistances of 29, 115, or 467 ohms respectively. Maximum overhung load is 12 oz., shaft inertia is 11 × 10⁻⁸ lb.-in.-sec², and weight is 3 oz. Response time is 6 ms unforced, 3 ms forced. A constant-current power supply is recommended for torque stability. The brake requires grounding and must use a flexible coupling; no mechanical impact, moisture, or metal particles are permitted.
