Placid Industries B150 Magnetic Particle Brake B150

Description
Placid magnetic particle brakes, also called powder brakes and mag particle brakes, provide smooth and repeatable torque control. Torque is proportional to input current, and independent of shaft speed, thereby allowing for precise control. These self-contained magnetic particle brakes are ideal for tension control, load simulation, and soft stops. Some large units are available with fan or pneumatic cooling. Torque rating from 1 oz.-in to 300 lb.-ft. With no electrical excitation, the shaft freely rotates. With electrical excitation, the shaft becomes coupled to the case. While the load torque is less than the output torque, the shaft won’t rotate. When the load torque is increased, the brake will slip smoothly at the torque level set by the coil input current.

Datasheet Summary
Powered by GS/AI

The B150 magnetic particle brake provides torque control proportional to input current and independent of shaft speed, enabling smooth slip when load torque exceeds set torque. It has a torque range of 3 to 150 lb.-in., a maximum RPM of 1300, and can dissipate up to 80 watts continuously. Maximum case temperature is 160 degrees F, with a maximum overhung load of 120 lbs. Shaft inertia is 15 × 10⁻⁴ lb.-in.-sec². Response time is 130 ms unforced and 65 ms forced. Weight is 12 lbs. Rated coil voltages are 6, 12, 24, and 90 VDC, with corresponding resistances and currents. The brake requires a constant-current DC power supply for precise torque control and must be electrically grounded. Installation requires slide-fit mounts, flexible couplings, and avoidance of impact, metal filings, or liquids.
