Placid Industries B15 Magnetic Particle Brake B15

Description
Placid magnetic particle brakes, also called powder brakes and mag particle brakes, provide smooth and repeatable torque control. Torque is proportional to input current, and independent of shaft speed, thereby allowing for precise control. These self-contained magnetic particle brakes are ideal for tension control, load simulation, and soft stops. Some large units are available with fan or pneumatic cooling. Torque rating from 1 oz.-in to 300 lb.-ft. With no electrical excitation, the shaft freely rotates. With electrical excitation, the shaft becomes coupled to the case. While the load torque is less than the output torque, the shaft won’t rotate. When the load torque is increased, the brake will slip smoothly at the torque level set by the coil input current.

Datasheet Summary
Powered by GS/AI

The B15 magnetic particle brake provides torque control proportional to input current and independent of shaft speed, enabling smooth slip for tension control and load simulation. It has a torque range of 0.3 to 15 lb.-in., a maximum RPM of 2000, and dissipates up to 20 watts continuously. The case temperature must not exceed 160 degrees F, with a maximum overhung load of 40 lbs. and shaft inertia of 34 x 10^-6 lb.-in.-sec^2. Response times are 25 ms unforced and 14 ms forced. It weighs 2.5 lbs. and is available with rated D.C. coil voltages of 6 V, 12 V, 24 V, or 90 V, corresponding to coil resistances of 7.3, 28, 105, and 1370 ohms respectively. Installation requires grounding, flexible couplings, and avoidance of mechanical shock or metal contamination.
