The MCP23016 is a 16-bit I/O expander designed for I¬=C-compatible applications, providing a straightforward solution for expanding input/output capabilities in embedded systems. It features 16 bi-directional I/Os that can be configured as either inputs or outputs, with a default state of input. The device supports a maximum I¬=C clock frequency of 400 kbits/s and operates within a supply voltage range of 2.0 to 5.5V. The MCP23016 includes several programmable registers for configuration, output values, and polarity settings. It has a low current consumption profile and can directly drive LEDs with a source and sink current capability of 25 mA per I/O. The device also features an open-drain interrupt output that signals changes in input states, allowing for efficient communication with the master device without continuous I¬=C bus traffic. With three external address pins, the MCP23016 can be connected to up to eight devices on the same I¬=C bus, making it suitable for various applications, including driving sensors, keypads, and LEDs in industrial and consumer electronics. It is specified for operation over an industrial temperature range of -40¬8C to +85¬8C and is available in multiple package options, including PDIP, SOIC, TSSOP, and QFN.
The MCP23016 is not recommended for new designs. Please consider using the MCP23017 or MCP23018 instead.
The MCP23016 device provides 16-bit, general purpose, parallel I/O expansion for I2C™Compatible bus applications. It includes high-current drive capability, low supply current and individual I/O configuration. I/O expanders provide a simple solution when additional I/Os are needed for ACPI, power switches, sensors, push buttons, LEDs and so on.
