The AY0438-I/P is a CMOS integrated circuit designed to drive liquid crystal displays (LCDs) with up to 32 segments. It operates under microprocessor control and simplifies the display driving process by requiring only three control lines due to its serial input architecture. The device can handle various configurations of LCDs, including standard and custom parallel drive displays, and supports 7-, 9-, 14-, or 16-segment characters, as well as special symbols. This driver features a wide supply voltage range, low power consumption, and high noise immunity, making it suitable for diverse applications such as industrial, consumer, telecom, and automotive displays. The AY0438 includes electrostatic discharge protection on all pins and can be cascaded with multiple devices for larger display configurations. It is available in both 40-lead dual in-line plastic and 44-lead PLCC packages, with unpackaged dice also offered. The internal oscillator can generate the necessary AC frequency for the LCD waveforms, or an external signal can be used.
