Among its applications, structural grade beryllium S-200F has been used successfully as an optical substrate and support bench in many astronomical telescopes, in fire control and FLIR systems, and in spacecraft and weather satellites. The material is most frequently used for parts machined from hot-pressed block.
Materion Brush Beryllium & Composites’ S-200F is a versatile material that is selected when weight and inertia factors exceed those of lower cost aluminum. With its low mass, it can be driven through the scanning cycle much faster, with lower power requirements.
S-200F contains a minimum 98.5% beryllium. In most applications, its optical surface is a hard, polished coating of electroless nickel, 24 micrometers to 150 micrometers thick. Electroless nickel is harder than bare beryllium and more easily polished to a fine surface finish.
