Vimentin is the major and usually only intermediate filament in a variety of non muscle mesenchymal cells, including all fibroblastic cells, endothelial cells, lipocytes, Schwann cells and macrophages. The pattern of expression of intermediate filaments may be used as a device to aid in the classification of undifferentiated neoplasms. Vimentin is expressed in most malignant melanomas, either in the primary site or in metastatic foci.
