IHS ESDU Calculation methods for steadily loaded axial groove hydrodynamic journal bearings. (Guide to use of computer program A9305.) 93005

Description
ESDU 93005 introduces a computer program that implements the calculation methods of ESDU 84031 and 85028 and so considers both laminar and turbulent flow in a bearing with one or two grooves. The program predicts, in either case, the minimum film thickness (taking any misalignment into account), the eccentricity ratio, the power loss, the lubricant flow rate, and the bearing and lubricant temperatures. It can, optionally, provide a preliminary design to satisfy specified requirements and constraints. The preliminary design method incorporates recommendations for lubricant grade and feed pressure, bearing overall size and proportions, running clearance and groove dimensions. The program applies to mineral oil lubricants and properties are held in a database that can be edited or to which further lubricants may be added. The program provides warnings if the bearing temperature is too high, the outlet temperature is too high, the lubricant temperature is outside the usable range, the film thickness is too small, or there is a risk of half-speed whirl. Suggestions for remedial action in each case are made. The input and output format is fully explained and illustrated with worked examples. The program is available as ESDUpac A9305.
