Kernco's recent atomic clock development programs have focused on a new application of an existing technology known as Coherent Population Trapping (CPT). CPT is a quantum mechanical process that directly exploits the coherence of a laser pumping source. The Coherent Population Trapping technique essentially eliminates, in the first order, the mechanisms that have impacted the long-term stability of conventional rubidium based frequency standards, i.e. cavity pulling, light shift, optical spectral sensitivity and microwave spectral sensitivity. CPT technology offers a significant reduction in cost, size, weight and power while minimizing many of the long-term instability mechanisms common to small atomic oscillators currently offered in the commercial market. This CPT clock has a wide range of applications for growing customer applications. The low drift rate, accuracy and excellent long-term stability provided by CPT technology opens the door to many dual use (military and commercial) applications, as well as expanding markets for precise timing instrumentation requiring:
Stratum II network performance for telecommunication system timing.
Synchronization of control and communications networks over a wide physical area
Enabling of sophisticated GPS receivers to lock directly to the PPS Y-code without recourse to first acquiring the C/A code
Timing accuracy in the unavailability of the GPS system.
Relative navigation particularly for long flight-time missions
A compact, low power, low cost frequency/time standard will find a market in virtually every aspect of modern electronics including communications, test and measurement, computer networking and personal location and positioning devices.
