Placid Industries PLB-200 Magnetic Particle Brake PLB-200

Description
Placid magnetic particle brakes, also called powder brakes and mag particle brakes, provide smooth and repeatable torque control. Torque is proportional to input current, and independent of shaft speed, thereby allowing for precise control. These self-contained magnetic particle brakes are ideal for tension control, load simulation, and soft stops. Some large units are available with fan or pneumatic cooling. Torque rating from 1 oz.-in to 300 lb.-ft. With no electrical excitation, the shaft freely rotates. With electrical excitation, the shaft becomes coupled to the case. While the load torque is less than the output torque, the shaft won’t rotate. When the load torque is increased, the brake will slip smoothly at the torque level set by the coil input current.

Datasheet Summary
Powered by GS/AI

The PLB-200 is a magnetic particle brake designed for smooth torque control in applications requiring precise tension or load simulation. It mounts horizontally and has a torque range of 4 to 140 lb.-ft., with a maximum RPM of 500 and a maximum case temperature of 160°F. The brake dissipates 350 watts of heat normally, or up to 500 watts with 7 psi compressed air at 9 ft.³/minute. It requires a DC input current of up to 2.4 amperes, corresponding to 20 to 24 volts depending on temperature, and has a de-magnetized drag torque of 1.5 lb.-ft. The shaft inertia is 0.69 lb.-in.-sec², and the unit weighs 62 lbs. Maximum overhung load is 200 lbs. Piped air cooling uses a 3/8-19 BSPT tapped hole with an included adaptor fitting. The brake must be electrically grounded, connected via a flexible coupling, and kept free of metal filings and moisture.
