The PHC-100 magnetic particle clutch is a torque-controllable device that couples an input shaft to a hollow output shaft via electrical excitation, with torque proportional to coil current and independent of slip RPM. It operates with a torque range of 1 to 65 lb.-ft. and a maximum RPM of 1000. The clutch has a case weight of 46 lbs., a maximum case temperature of 160°F, and a maximum overhung load of 175 lbs. Input shaft inertia is 0.64 lb.-in.-sec² and output shaft inertia is 0.14 lb.-in.-sec². It requires a direct current power supply, with maximum input current of 2.2 amperes, and must be mounted horizontally. Heat dissipation ranges from 400 watts at 100 RPM to 800 watts at 1000 RPM. The body is finned for air cooling and must be guarded to prevent injury.
Placid magnetic particle clutches, also called magnetic powder clutches, provide a wide operating Torque Range. The torque is smooth and repeatable, thereby allowing for accurate control independent of the speed. The torque vs. current curve is nearly linear, making these clutches uniquely suited for tension control unwind/rewind applications, load simulation, torque limiting, and adjustable soft starts. Available in small and large sizes with torque ranging from 0.3 to 300 lb.-feet.
