The H3 hysteresis brake is a magnetically actuated device that couples the shaft to the housing when electrically excited, with torque proportional to input current and independent of RPM. It operates from 0.04 to 2.5 oz.-in. of torque at up to 10,000 RPM, with a maximum case temperature of 180 °F and continuous heat dissipation of 5 watts. The shaft inertia is 61 × 10⁻⁶ oz.-in.-sec², and the response time is 10 milliseconds. It requires a 24 V DC constant-current power supply and has a maximum overhung load of 16 oz. Weight is 3.6 oz. The brake must be grounded for safety and mounted with a flexible coupling to avoid misalignment. It is not suitable for precise positioning, and cogging must be avoided by ramping down voltage while rotating the shaft through at least 3/4 turn. The coil resistance is 173 ohms, and rated input current is 0.12 amps.
Torque is proportional to input current, and independent of RPM. Torque is especially smooth, even at near-zero RPM. Also good for light tension / high RPM applications, due to good heat dissipation ratings. All models except H3 have the Cog-Buster which keeps slip torque smooth.
