The C2D magnetic particle clutch is a low-torque device designed for precise torque control in applications requiring smooth slip operation. It operates with no electrical excitation allowing free rotation, and couples input and output shafts when energized, with torque proportional to coil current. The clutch delivers a torque range of 0.1 to 5 oz.-in., withstands a maximum speed of 2000 RPM, and can dissipate up to 2 watts of heat continuously. Maximum case temperature is 160 degrees F, with a maximum overhung load of 4 lbs. and output shaft inertia of 57 × 10⁻⁸ lb.-in.-sec². Response times are 9 ms unforced and 4 ms forced. It weighs 0.7 lbs. and is available with 6 VDC, 12 VDC, or 24 VDC rated coil voltages, connected via solder terminals. The device requires electrical grounding and must be mounted with flexible couplings and precise shaft alignment.
Placid magnetic particle clutches, also called magnetic powder clutches, provide a wide operating Torque Range. The torque is smooth and repeatable, thereby allowing for accurate control independent of the speed. The torque vs. current curve is nearly linear, making these clutches uniquely suited for tension control unwind/rewind applications, load simulation, torque limiting, and adjustable soft starts. Available in small and large sizes with torque ranging from 0.3 to 300 lb.-feet.
