The KC-5 magnetic particle clutch provides controllable torque from 0.5 to 38 lb.-ft. via electrical excitation, with no slip below set torque and smooth slipping above it. It operates at up to 1800 RPM, has a maximum case temperature of 160°F, and weighs 35 lbs. Heat dissipation is 190 watts at 100 RPM and 275 watts at 1000 RPM. Piped air cooling at 5 psi and 7 ft.³/minute increases capacity to 425 watts. Input shaft inertia is 0.084 lb.-in.-sec², output shaft inertia is 0.042 lb.-in.-sec², and maximum overhung load is 125 lbs. Use a constant-current DC supply; maximum input voltage is 24 V. Mount horizontally, ground the unit, and avoid exposure to metals, liquids, or impact. Use flexible couplings and align shafts precisely.
Placid magnetic particle clutches, also called magnetic powder clutches, provide a wide operating Torque Range. The torque is smooth and repeatable, thereby allowing for accurate control independent of the speed. The torque vs. current curve is nearly linear, making these clutches uniquely suited for tension control unwind/rewind applications, load simulation, torque limiting, and adjustable soft starts. Available in small and large sizes with torque ranging from 0.3 to 300 lb.-feet.
