Bioactive glass has high biocompatibility. For cosmetics and cosmeceuticals, the unique biocompatibility of bioactive glass translates into absolute skin compatibility. This is consistent with the results repeatedly demonstrated in multiple long-term and short-term skin patch experiments. Bioactive glass releases the ions contained in its components when it is reactively reacted with water or human tissue fluid because of their high bioavailability. These ions form a mineral matrix on the particle surface, equivalent to that of natural hydroxyapatite.
