ESDU Perf EG5/1 gives simple formulae for estimating the distance and the time in ground run, transition and climb out. It is suggested that the forces should be evaluated at the mean speed in the transition. For the ground run, which may need to be treated in segments if an engine failure occurs, a set of curves is given that yield the speed at which the forces are determined according to the ratios, at the beginning and end of the segment, of the accelerations and the speeds. The changes required to the formulae to take into account the effect of the wind and runway gradient are included. The effect of rocket assistance is discussed, and a set of curves allows the reduced ground run to be estimated quickly.
