IHS ESDU Calculation methods for steadily loaded central circumferential groove hydrodynamic journal bearings. (Guide to use of computer program A9304.) 93004

Description
ESDU 93004 introduces a computer program that implements the calculation method of ESDU 90027. The program predicts the minimum lubricant film thickness (taking any misalignment into account), eccentricity ratio, the power loss, the lubricant flow rate, and the bearing and lubricant temperatures. It can, optionally, provide a preliminary design to satisfy specified requirements and constraints. The preliminary design method incorporates recommendations for lubricant grade and feed pressure, bearing overall size and proportions, running clearance and groove dimensions. The program applies for any liquid acting as a lubricant that can be regarded as Newtonian and lubricant properties are held in a database that can be edited or to which further lubricants may be added. The program provides warnings if the bearing temperature is too high, the outlet temperature is too high, the lubricant temperature is outside the usable range, the film thickness is too small, or there is a risk of half-speed whirl. Suggestions for remedial action in each case are made. The input and output format is fully explained and illustrated with worked examples. The program is available as ESDUpac A9304.
