IHS ESDU Calculation methods for steadily loaded central circumferential groove hydrodynamic journal bearings. 90027

Description
ESDU 90027 provides a method for the design and performance analysis of bearings that are steadily loaded or for which the load and/or speed vary slowly. A design procedure generates the bearing proportions, overall size, and groove dimensions once the load and speed are specified, and also provides the bearing clearance and the viscosity grade of the lubricant (when it is not initially specified) and its feed pressure. The design may be analysed using equations and charts to determine the power loss, lubricant flow rate, bearing temperature, and lubricant temperature and film thickness. Finally, the design is assessed to ensure it meets criteria for minimum film thickness (taking account of surface finish), maximum bearing temperature, and lubricant outlet temperature. The bearing is also checked for stability. The procedure is illustrated with a practical worked example. See ESDU 93004 for a Fortran program of this calculation method.
