IHS ESDU Film thicknesses in lubricated Hertzian contacts. Part 2: point contacts. 89045

Description
ESDU 89045 provides a step-by-step calculation procedure for predicting the minimum lubricant film thickness in concentrated contacts that occur, for example, in rolling element bearings, variable traction drives and meshing gears. It applies to contact of metallic, plastic or ceramic components lubricated by any fluid. Tables are included of appropriate properties of various materials and lubricants for use in the procedure. Guidance is given on assessing the adequacy of the film thickness in various applications and on redesigning the contact where the predicted thickness is inadequate. The procedure is completely general, but simplifications are also given, for example, when the lubricant is entrained along an axis of the contact ellipse. A calculation sheet assists in the application of the method, and its use is illustrated through three practical worked examples. A program of the method is available as ESDUpac A 9138, see ESDU 91038.
