IHS ESDU Calculation methods for steadily loaded axial groove hydrodynamic journal bearings. Superlaminar operation. (To be used in conjunction with ESDU 84031.) 85028

Description
ESDU 85028 extends the scope of ESDU 84031 to the analysis of axial groove hydrodynamic journal bearings under conditions for which the flow in the lubricating film is not laminar. Such superlaminar conditions can arise at high speed or if the lubricant is of very low viscosity. The analysis method, together with the recommendations on lubricant viscosity grade, bearing overall size and proportions, running clearance and groove dimensions obtained from ESDU 84031, provides a method for design of bearings in the superlaminar regime. The Item incorporates Equations and charts which allow the prediction of:eccentricity ratio, power loss, lubricant flow rates, bearing and lubricant temperatures, andlubricant film thickness. The analysis procedure is illustrated by flowchart and by worked examples.
