IHS ESDU Nested helical compression springs of round wire (to be used in conjunction with Data Item No. 82008). 82012

Description
Data are provided, in graphical form where possible, for the design of helical compression springs acting in combination. The design process is applicable to either two or three springs arranged concentrically or just two springs arranged telescopically. Clearance between concentric springs is obtained by using a clearance factor incorporated into the design equations - minor discrepancies produced between calculated and recommended clearances are discussed. Design notes on nested springs are provided and a shortened process explained in which an existing single spring design may be directly replaced with a nest in order to reduce either stress, length or outside diameter. Three worked examples are provided concerning the design of both types of nest.
