IHS ESDU Designing with rolling bearings. Part 2: selection of single row angular contact ball, tapered roller and spherical roller bearings. 81037

Description
ESDU 81037 is the second of a group of three dealing with design considerations in rolling bearing selection. It will assist designers in those applications where a bearing arrangement consisting of a single row radial ball bearing or a single row cylindrical roller bearing (dealt with in Part 1) is not suitable. It considers single row angular contact and four point (duplex) ball bearings, single and double row tapered roller bearings and spherical roller bearings (double row). Adjacent pairs of single row angular contact ball bearings and bearing units consisting of a four point (duplex) ball bearing and a cylindrical roller bearing mounted adjacent to each other are also considered. ESDU 81037 gives guidance on choosing the most appropriate bearing and bearing arrangement. The procedure includes flowcharts for the selection of bearing type and size, and data input tables and calculation sheets for specifying the design requirements and recording the results of the calculations involved. The operating characteristics of each bearing type are dealt with in detail and guidance is given on the avoidance of tribological problems or unnecessarily large bearings. Information is included on such topics as internal clearance, bearing setting and pre-loading. A comprehensive set of charts, which indicate the dimensions and load rating of the bearings considered, is presented. Examples of typical bearing arrangements are described and equations and charts are included for the calculation of bearing loads. The choice of contact angle in opposed pair bearing arrangements is covered.
