This is the fourth in an integrated group that deal with the stability and response of linear systems. ESDU 80002 considers the specification and measures of system performance which are used with the methods of system assessment that may be found in the other parts of this group. The system performance is described for the time domain, the frequency domain, and the complex (root) domain and the measures of performance in each are detailed. A qualitative assessment of the measures of performance in the three domains is simplified by a consideration of the dominant mode(s) of the system response. A discussion of the "performance index" method of assessing the merits of different systems is given.
