IHS ESDU Fatigue strength of transverse welded joints and attachments in steels under bending loading. 78023

Description
ESDU 78023 plots the results of constant amplitude fatigue tests drawn from the literature using the alternating stress in the loaded plate in the plane of the weld toe against the endurance. One graph plots all the data for as-welded joints with toe failures; the data are for zero mean stress but show the effect of varying plate thickness from 15 to 35 mm (0.6 to 1.4 in). For joints with ground weld toes, data show the effect of mean stress and plate thickness. A graph also compares the data with data from ESDU 75016 for fatigue strength under axial loading. The effects of residual and mean stresses, joint size and grinding on fatigue performance are discussed, as are the effects of leg length and weld penetration with, in that case, a graph showing their influence on location of failure.
