IHS ESDU Full-potential method for three-dimensional wings and wing-body combinations - inviscid flow. Part 4: Evaluation of trailing-vortex drag and wave components. 06016

Description
This is Part 4 of a series dealing with the computational fluid dynamics program FP. Parts 1 and 2 of the series deal respectively with the principles of FP and the practical aspects of running FP and its associated programs on a PC. Part 3 of the series presents a variant of FP (denoted by FPIBE) which for a wing-body combination provides improved estimates of the lift and drag contributions of the body compared with the original program, FP. This Item presents programs that evaluate the trailing-vortex drag and wave drag components corresponding to any prior run of FP (or FPIBE). In addition the overall lift is also evaluated. The wave drag is evaluated by two different approximate methods. A number of examples are considered, and particular attention is given to assessing the levels of uncertainty in the wave drag predictions. Overall lift and trailing-vortex drag are well predicted. It is recommended that the programs presented in this Item are run in all cases where the overall lift and drag are of interest.
