BSV 150 — 400 Ball Segment Valve The Ball Segment Valve, BSV for short, is the result of a development of an innovative valve for pharmaceutical and fine chemical processes. For a wide range of solids applications, it is the preferred valve for process equipment like vacuum driers, reactors or centrifuges as both as inlet and discharge valve. Even if products are not free flowing, have an abrasive effect or have moist and adhesive properties, the Ball Segment Valve is the right choice as a reliable, vacuum and pressure-tight process valve. The internal corner-free and edge-free housing does full fill your cGMP requirements and leaves the ball segment sufficient space to move clear of the product flow path when opened. A reactor agitator or mixing tool can be designed to move within a few millimeters of the Ball Segment Valve virtually eliminating dead-space in the process area. Besides the standard flanges, the BSV can be equipped with tailored and non-DIN flange connections to suit most existing reactor vessels. Full bore discharge design Due to its totally unobstructed full bore design, a 90° turn of the ball segment is required to move from the fully closed to fully open position, i.e. the ball segment is entirely out of the product flow. The inflatable seal The heart of the Ball-Segment-Valve is the inflatable seal. By inflating the seal, the narrow gap between the segment and the scraper ring at the housing will be closed. Encrusted deposits on the segment are broken off and removed by the scraper ring before the segment does pass the seal. The scraper ring also prevents entering of larger particles into the area of the inflatable seal. The elastic lip of the inflatable seal effectively encapsulates any small particles remaining on the segment surface. Thereby the vacuum/pressure tightness of the reactor is assured. Before the ball segment turns for opening, the elastic inflatable seal retracts into its protected mounting position behind the scraper ring. This type of design means that the seal is subjected to almost no share forces and has an exceptionally long service life. Closing The ball segment is moved into the vertical CLOSED position. The seal is pressurized. It inflates in seconds and creates a seal against the spherical ball segment. The process equipment is ready for loading and also for pressure/vacuum. Process in the reactor, over a period of hours when applicable, takes place. Opening The pressure/vacuum in the dryer/reactor is relieved. Pressure is removed from the inflatable seal and it retracts. A time cycle of approx. five seconds allows the elastic sealing material to revert to its original shape. The ball segment turns to 90° in the housing. At the same time, the scraper ring removes any deposits built up on the segment. The product can flow in/out freely. The BSV can close against the product flow and where appropriate a vessel can be changed.
