The M8A3 provides purified air to individual vehicle crew members when positive cabin pressure cannot be maintained. It is used as a backup CBRN system in many armored vehicles and as a primary system in tactical vehicles that do not have an enclosed cabin or require an open cabin for operation. In the M8A3 CBRN filtration unit, the M13 filter is housed within the M2A2 air purifier, which also contains a blower and an inertial dust separator (cyclone). Contaminated air passes through the fan and cyclone to the M13 particulate filter and finally through the M12A2 gas filter before being distributed to vehicle crew via air supply hoses.
