The Flottweg Purifier: Three-Phase Separation (Liquid/Liquid/Solid ) In this configuration, the Flottweg separator separates mixtures of liquids with different densities at the same time as separating a solid. The Flottweg Purifier: The Bowl In a purifier, the product to be separated runs through a stationary infeed pipe into the interior of the bowl, and is gently accelerated by the distributor to the full speed of rotation. The disc pack in the bowl causes the product stream to be divided up into many thin layers, creating a large surface area. The liquid mixture is separated within the disc pack, where the solid is also separated out. The liquid phases separated by centrifugal force are discharged from the bowl under pressure via two grippers. The centrifugal force makes the solids that are separated out collect in the solids space of the bowl. A hydraulic system in the base of the bowl periodically ejects the separated-out solid at full speed of rotation.
