Since these cracks may be extremely difficult to see, the use of an eddy current instrument, such as the Visual Eddy, is used to first locate a flaw. If a flaw is located using the eddy current technique, the outside of the cylinder is marked with a grease pencil in the general area of the indicated flaw.
The Opti-Viewer is switched on and inserted into the cylinder. With the light source lining up with the grease pencil mark, one looks into the viewer and attempts to visually confirm the presence of a crack. The supplied spacer rings can be used to raise the viewer for inspecting threads closer to the top of the cylinder.
