For the A380, CEF designed a scroll compressor to accomodate the high pressure and flow requirements associated to the potable water system. Scroll compressors are positive displacement devices that work by using two inter-fitting Archimedes spiral-shaped scroll members to compress air. One of the scrolls is located in a fixed position while the other scroll rotates eccentrically around it. The air is then sucked in from a port located on the outside diameter and compressed to exit from the center. This design offers some unique advantages for aircraft applications in that our scroll compressor uses less energy than a piston compressor to produce the same volume and pressure of air. Additionally, scroll compressors are smoother running resulting in quieter operations, more compact in size and have fewer moving parts increasing their reliability.
