Permanent Hot melt adhesives are 100% solids formulations based on thermoplastic polymers. They are solid at room temperature and are activated upon heating above their softening point, at which stage they are liquid, and can be applied. After application, they retain the ability to wet-out the substrate until they solidify. As the hot melts solidify, they return to a physical state that has structural integrity and can function as an adhesive.
Permanent Hot Melt is applied by extruding, rolling, or spraying and bonding is carried out immediately after application or after reheating the solidified layer. There are a large variety of polymers used in this class of hot melts and includes both natural and synthetic polymers. The high viscosity and set speed of the hot melt makes it particularly suitable for porous and permeable substrates that otherwise would be more difficult to bond with other adhesive types.
