Brushless DC electric motor (BLDC motors, BL motors) also known as electronically commutated motors (ECMs, EC motors), or synchronous DC motors, are synchronous motors powered by DC electricity via an inverter or switching power supply which produces an AC electric current to drive each phase of the motor via a closed loop controller. Because a computer controls the motor instead of mechanical brushes, it’s more precise. The controller also provides pulses of current to the motor windings that controls the speed and torque of the motor. With the feedback of position sensor, the speed and the torque of the motor can be controlled precisely.
Built for precision, efficiency and reliability, these motors offer the power density needed to deliver top performance in the most compact applications. Available in slotless designs, they provide exceptional acceleration, speed, torque and position control over a long, trouble-free life.
BLDC motors have a number of advantages over the Brush DC Motors. For one, they are more accurate in positioning apps, relying on Hall effect position sensors for commutation. They beat brush motors in the speed/torque tradeoff with their ability to maintain or increase torque at various speeds. Most importantly, there is no power loss across brushes, so, they require less and sometimes no maintenance due to the lack of brushes, making the components significantly more efficient.
