Reduce Noise With Sonic-Shield’s Acoustical Curtain

Sonic-Shield has developed a modular sound dampening Acoustical Curtain consisting of our 1 lb/sf Sonic-Shield® Noise Barrier together with our 2” thick Sonic Fiber sound absorption material.

We believe that Sonic Curtains offer a better alternative to the typical quilted “acoustic blankets”, which have limited abilities to block and absorb sound.

Each standard size curtain measures 54" by 96" and weighs approximately 50 pounds. Custom sizes are available depending on each individual situation. The curtains come with high quality hook and loop fasteners on the edges and grommets on the top.

Customized sizes and attributes

For applications where visual inspection of a noise source is needed, a “vision port” can be inserted into a curtain. Standard size vision ports are 22” x 12”. As mentioned above, variations from our standard size 54" by 96" curtains are available. For outdoor applications, a special weather resistant curtain is available using an additional Tyvek covering and in fact is sometimes strongly recommended, depending on local weather conditions.

Materials

Sonic Curtains are made from the combination of two materials, Sonic-Shield® noise barrier and Sonic Fiber sound absorbing mineral wool. Our barrier material is a high-performance, flexible mass-loaded vinyl noise barrier, offering superior acoustic transmission loss. The noise barrier product is located on the inside of the curtain and is a “cast” product instead of “extruded” which gives it a higher tensile strength. Designed to meet market requirements, it has been effectively used to reduce noise in building, commercial, industrial and automotive markets, on a global basis. The product was developed to be dense, thin, highly-flexible, tear-resistant and strong. These properties give our barrier product high transmission loss throughout the various weight ranges.

Our Sonic Fiber is a semi-flexible non-asbestos 2” thick mineral wool that provides greater sound attenuation than fiberglass bats or urethane foam. It is covered in an industrial grade high temperature woven fabric that repels water, is fire resistant and does not promote mold growth.

This combination provides outstanding soundproofing capabilities (26 STC, 1.0 NRC) in a modular, durable, attractive and easy-to-use package.

Sonic-Shield™ Noise Barrier Mass Loaded Vinyl is a flexible visco-elastic polymer that reduces the transmission of noise through walls, panels, partitions and enclosures. It won’t shrink, rot or cause metal corrosion and also features a strong resistance to adverse environmental condi­tions, oils, some acids and alkalis. Furthermore, Sonic-Shield™ Noise Barrier Mass Loaded Vinyl does not contain hazardous materials, lead or other heavy metals.

The Sound Transmission Class (STC) is obtained through testing by a certified laboratory to ASTM standards. The STC describes how well the material attenuates airborne sound, and is generally related to the amount of noise that the material is capable of attenuating. For example, a typical wall in a residential house has an STC of 33, meaning that it can attenuate 33 dB from one side of the wall to the other. The addition of Sonic-Shield™ to the wall can significantly increase the STC to over 50. Additional noise reduction can be obtained by using Sonic-Shield™ Noise Barrier with a sound absorbing material, such as Sonic-Fiber™.

Sonic-Shield™ Noise Barrier mass loaded vinyl is also available with a reinforced aluminum foil facing, which gives it a UL Class A fire rating per ASTM E-84, “Surface Burning Characteristics of Building Materials”. Class A is the highest degree of fire resistance, which means that it resists the penetration of fire as a result of a standard fire exposure. We recommend use of Class A Sonic-Shield™ Noise Barrier mass loaded vinyl in applications where fire resistance is required by building codes, including walls, doors, roofs, attics, elevators, equipment rooms, etc. Other applications that may require Class A materials include high temperature applications, such as HVAC duct liners and engine compartments.

Sonic-Shield’s sound dampening acoustical panels consist of a sheet of Sonic Shield Noise Barrier and Sonic Fiber Noise Absorber to effectively block and absorb unwanted noise. The resulting panel has a Sound Transmission Class (STC) of 26 and a Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) of 1.0, meaning that they are capable of attenuating 26 dB of noise from one side of the panel to the other and that they are also capable of completely absorbing noise. This results in a panel with outstanding sound reduction abilities.

Sonic-Shield soft sided panels

Our panels are generally used in industrial or commercial settings, where generators, pumps, motors, chillers, transformers, and other large pieces of machinery are the source of the noise. Generally speaking it is more practical to enclose the noise source with acoustical panels than it is to soundproof the area where the affected parties are working or playing. Enclosing the source of the noise with the hard aluminum panels is our most common solution for outdoor noise problems. Our panels “travel well” and hold up under the most difficult weather conditions from extreme heat to extreme cold. Rain, humidity and a hot, warm climate have proven to be no obstacle for our panels over the years as they have stood the test of time on job site after job site. For indoor noise problems that occur in gymnasiums, bars, restaurants, and auditoriums, our soft panels are more commonly used as soundproofing solutions. They are able to reduce echoing, reverberation and other airborne noise to manageable levels. Our panels can be fabricated in various forms, with hard metal frames which can be formed into arbitrary shapes, painted or powder coated, or they can be provided as “soft” panels, which can be hung from walls or outdoor fences. Panels can also be assembled into structures, enclosures or silencers. Our ability to manufacture panels into custom shapes and configurations allow us to create a wide variety of sound reduction systems for number industrial, commercial and residential applications.
