Placid Industries B35 Magnetic Particle Brake B35

Description
Placid magnetic particle brakes, also called powder brakes and mag particle brakes, provide smooth and repeatable torque control. Torque is proportional to input current, and independent of shaft speed, thereby allowing for precise control. These self-contained magnetic particle brakes are ideal for tension control, load simulation, and soft stops. Some large units are available with fan or pneumatic cooling. Torque rating from 1 oz.-in to 300 lb.-ft. With no electrical excitation, the shaft freely rotates. With electrical excitation, the shaft becomes coupled to the case. While the load torque is less than the output torque, the shaft won’t rotate. When the load torque is increased, the brake will slip smoothly at the torque level set by the coil input current.

Datasheet Summary
Powered by GS/AI

The B35 is a magnetic particle brake designed for smooth torque control in tension and load simulation applications. It provides 0.6 to 35 lb.-in. of torque, independent of shaft speed, with a maximum RPM of 1800 and a continuous heat dissipation of 30 watts. The maximum case temperature is 160°F, and it supports up to 50 lbs. of overhung load. Rated coil voltages are 6 V, 12 V, 24 V, and 90 V, with corresponding coil resistances of 4.4 Ω, 17 Ω, 65 Ω, and 830 Ω. Shaft inertia is 12 × 10⁻⁵ lb.-in.-sec². Response times are 35 ms unforced and 20 ms forced. Weight is 4 lbs. A constant-current DC supply is recommended. The shaft rotates freely without excitation and couples to the housing when energized. Grounding and flexible coupling are required.
