FTL Technology PTFE Seals

Description
PTFE seals are often used in hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders. In comparison to more traditional elastomer solutions, PTFE seals can offer some additional unique characteristics. Low friction at high pressures is the more important of these however low stick slip, high abrasion resistance and extreme chemical compatibility are all factors which present PTFE seals an important option when designing efficient and reliable sealing systems. PTFE seals usually need to be energised by a static secondary system. In most cases, this will be in the form of a radially-compressed elastomer which provides the force necessary for the profile ring to seal at low pressure. Metallic springs can be used where there is a media compatibility issue. Resistance to extrusion, abrasion resistance and sealing efficiency can all be affected by the individual compound and geometry being used. FTL Technology has a wealth of experience and can recommend the best material for the application in question. The sealing efficiency of PTFE is generally worse than that of traditional elastomer solution so careful consideration of the overall specification is required for a system to operate successfully. This often results in combinations of seals being used which may also include elastomer items. Advantages Low friction at high pressures and speeds Low stick slip High media compatibility High abrasion resistance Simple installation
