Tie Layer is a new solution for catheter construction created to reduce delamination and ultimately improve patient safety. This ultra-thin thermoplastic layer is applied over a catheter liner during construction. Tie Layer creates a melt-bondable surface that improves adhesion to both the liner and catheter jacket during the reflow process. Tie Layer also increases yields and reduces manufacturing cost.
Delamination is a challenging failure mode in catheter construction; it carries both risk and cost burden for device manufacturers. Detection typically does not occur until final testing – after catheter assembly is complete – resulting in significant product loss. Delamination can also lead to failures in the field and product recalls.
By creating a stronger bond between the outer catheter jacket and inner liner, Zeus’ Tie Layer solution increases consistency in catheter performance and ultimately improves patient safety. Tie Layer reduces inspection requirements, increases product yield, and lowers manufacturing costs. Tie Layer is a true total solution in catheter design and manufacturing.
Key Properties
Biocompatibility – For medical applications, tie layer coatings use only USP Class VI approved thermoplastic materials.
Heat Weldable – Tie layer coatings easily melt to coincide with any jacket reflow process creating a strong and heat welded bond.
Thin Layer – Tie layer coatings can be as low as 0.0001″ (0.0025 mm) to minimize the overall dimensions of your device.
Bond Strength – Tie Layer increases liner-to-jacket bond strength at least 2.5× over non-tie-layered jacket construction.
