Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is uniquely suited to this situation thanks to its superior tissue-penetration depth and good spatial resolution. This Spotlight summarizes recent progress in the surface modification and application of carbon nanoparticles as PA contrast agents. Carbon-based contrast agents are expected to have great potential in basic biomedical research and clinical diagnostic applications.
