An absolute optical rotary encoder provides a unique binary word for each position. Single-turn encoders are ideal for motion control applications where the position-sensing device moves at a slow rate under one rotation or is inactive for long periods of time. Absolute encoders excel in situations where the position information is needed only periodically (not continuously) or in instances where a power outage requires a machine to be able to reorient itself without having to "re-zero" any of its settings. In these instances once the encoder has power again, the controller knows the position as soon as it reads the data lines from the encoder.
