This standard test method is intended for use in determinations of low concentrations of phosphonate residuals in brines from oil and gas operations and other industrial sources. This standard is intended for use by oil and gas operators, service companies, and others to determine residual phosphonate concentrations in systems being treated with phosphonate inhibitors to monitor their treating program and provide data relative to treatment or re-treatment options. Organic phosphonate compounds are commonly contained in the chemical treatments used as mineral scale and corrosion inhibitors in oil and gas operations, water injection/disposal operations, and other industrial applications. The test method set forth in this standard was developed at Rice University(1) under the direction of Dr. Mason Tomson 1 with funding for the work provided by the Gas Research Institute (GRl) This standard was prepared by Task Group T-1D-52, a component of Unit Committee T-1D on Corrosion Monitoring and Control of Corrosion Environments in Petroleum Production Operations, and is issued by NACE International under the auspices of Group Committee T-1 on Corrosion Control in Petroleum Production. This test method is also being reviewed by the
American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) for approval as a standard method.
This standard covers the colorimetric determination of phosphonate in the range of 0.1 to 5 mg/L in brines from gas and oil production operations, water injection/disposal operations, and other industrial applications. If the brine contains more than 5 mg/L phosphonate, the sample shall be diluted and analyzed by this procedure. Additional information can be found in APll4l RP 45.
