These washers are made of 17/7 precipitation hardened (PH) stainless steel, heat treated to Rockwell C40-48 hardness. They provide the strength of heat-treated steel and the corrosion resistance of a stainless steel. They can be used in atmospheres where plain steel, no matter how well painted, will not survive.
