Hydrolytic Sensitivity 7: reacts slowly with moisture/water Safety
Packaging Under Nitrogen Alkyl Silane - Conventional Surface Bonding Aliphatic, fluorinated aliphatic or substituted aromatic hydrocarbon substituents are the hydrophobic entities which enable silanes to induce surface hydrophobicity. The organic substitution of the silane must be non-polar. The hydrophobic effect of the organic substitution can be related to the free energy of transfer of hydrocarbon molecules from an aqueous phase to a homogeneous hydrocarbon phase. A successful hydrophobic coating must eliminate or mitigate hydrogen bonding and shield polar surfaces from interaction with water by creating a non-polar interphase. Although silane and silicone derived coatings are in general the most hydrophobic, they maintain a high degree of permeability to water vapor. This allows coatings to breathe and reduce deterioration at the coating interface associated with entrapped water. Since ions are not transported through non-polar silane and silicone coatings, they offer protection to composite structures ranging from pigmented coatings to rebar reinforced concrete. A selection guide for hydrophobic silanes can be found on pages 22-31 of the Hydrophobicity, Hydrophilicity and Silane Surface Modification brochure. Isobutylmethyldimeth

Datasheet Summary Powered by GS/AI
ISOBUTYLMETHYLDIMETHOXYSILANE, identified by the product code SII6452.8, is a liquid organomethoxysilane with the chemical formula C7H18O2Si. It serves primarily as a chemical intermediate and is classified as a flammable liquid (Category 3) and a serious eye irritant (Category 2A) under GHS US classification. The product is composed of 95-100% isobutylmethyldimethoxysilane, with a CAS number of 18293-82-8.
When handling this substance, precautions must be taken to avoid ignition sources, as it can form flammable vapor-air mixtures. It is recommended to store the product in a cool place and keep it tightly closed. In case of exposure, immediate first aid measures should be taken, including rinsing eyes and skin thoroughly with water. The product may react with moisture to release methanol, which poses additional health risks.
Engineers considering this product should evaluate its suitability for their applications, particularly in contexts requiring hydrophobic surface treatments or as a chemical intermediate, while also being mindful of its safety and handling requirements.
