The ATR 72MP Maritime Patrol is a multirole maritime patrol aircraft with very affordable costs, developed and built by Alenia Aermacchi from the platform of the modern ATR 72-600 regional turboprop.
The Italian Air Force is the launch customer, with four aircraft for the surveillance, maritime patrol and search and rescue role.
The primary ATR 72MP duties are maritime patrol for surface vessel search and identification, search and rescue (SAR), prevention of piracy, contraband and narcotics smuggling, environmental monitoring and disaster clean up (against oil or chemical spills), territorial water security. It can also carry personnel or paratroops.
The design is based on the ATR 42MP Surveyor experience, from which it differs in key aspects including the stretched fuselage (with four operator stations rather than two), glass cockpit and greater range of the ATR 72-600. Further enhancements are the C-27J self-protection suite and the significant upgrading of the proven Selex ES Airborne Tactical Observation and Surveillance (ATOS) mission system. Provisions exist to integrate the additional sensors and mission-specific Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) systems.
The ATOS mission system is based on three main sensors (Star Sapphire HD electro-optical turret, Selex ES Seaspray 7000E electronically-scann
ed array radar and Elettronica Electronic Support Measures) fully integrated within the mission system and with the flight avionics.
The self-protection suite includes chaff & flare launchers and radar, missile and laser warning.
The configuration also includes an Automatic Identification System (AIS), secure communications systems (Link 11/16) and broadband satellite systems to share information in real time with other platforms (whether in the air or on the surface) or with command and control centers.
