The 577 is a Curve Tracer from Tektronix. A curve tracer, or curve checker, is a type of electronic test equipment engineers use to analyze semiconductor device characteristics. Curve tracers contain current and voltage sources to stimulate the equipment under test (EUT). A curve tracer applies a swept voltage to two terminals of the EUT, measuring the level of current flowing at each voltage.

The Tektronix 577 Curve Tracer has a collector supply variable from 0 to 1600 volts in several operating modes, including AC. The current available varies from 10A (20 A Pulsed) on the lowest voltage range to 40mA (80mA Pulsed) on the highest voltage range. The collector supply power is set using a switch that changes series resistance to maintain the same peak power setting as the voltage range is changed. The collector supply is automatically disabled when the vertical display exceeds 2.5 screen dimensions, helping to protect the device under test from destructive currents.
The Tektronix 577 Curve Tracer with the 177 plug-in adapter allows dc parameter characterization of transitors, thyristors, linear ICs, diodes, SCRs, MOSFETs, optoelectronic components, solar cells, solid state displays and other semiconductor devices. By selecting one of three application specific adapters with the 178 plug-in, expanded parameter measurements are available for linear op-amps, SCRs and three terminal regulators.
Typical measurements include leakage, breakdown voltages up to 1600 volts, MOSFET Vgs(th), SCR Vgt/lgt, Diode Vf, ZENER Vz/Vf, resistance as well as other dc parameters.
