Propionic anhydride is a colorless liquid with a pungent odor, used chiefly as an acylating agent, e.g. as a raw material for dyes, pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals and fragrance chemicals. Propionic anhydride is also used for the production of cellulose acetate propionate.
